How to compare veterinary practice management software
A useful PIMS comparison starts with your clinic's working day—not a list of checkmarks. Use the same patient journey, questions, and evidence to evaluate every system on your shortlist.

What is a veterinary PIMS?
A practice information management system brings patient records and day-to-day practice administration together. When comparing veterinary practice management software, look at how records, billing, inventory, and communication support your particular practice—not simply whether a feature name appears in a brochure. AAHA identifies ease of use and practice-specific fit as important selection criteria. [1]
1. Compare the same clinic workflows
Bring a sample appointment and a list of must-have tasks to each demonstration. Include the people who will use the system every day; AAHA's transition guidance emphasizes early team involvement. [3]
The Nuzlo column summarizes offerings described on our homepage and waitlist page. It is not an independent product test or a guarantee of availability. Clinic Connect is onboarding founding clinics; confirm scope and timing in a walkthrough.
Patient records & charting
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Open a patient history, write a SOAP note, and attach a document. Ask your clinical team to complete the same task.
Nuzlo's published offering
Digital patient records, SOAP notes, and paper chart upload are listed on the Clinic Connect waitlist page.
Scheduling & team workflows
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Book and move an appointment, then check a doctor's availability. Test your busiest front-desk scenario.
Nuzlo's published offering
Scheduling, doctor availability, and team management are described on Nuzlo's public pages.
Medications & vaccines
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Record a vaccine and prescription, review their history, and show how a client receives a reminder.
Nuzlo's published offering
Medication tracking, vaccine logging, and client reminders are described on Nuzlo's public pages.
Inventory & invoicing
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Record a stock change and create an invoice. Ask how charges and stock movements relate in your workflow.
Nuzlo's published offering
Inventory logging and invoice processing are listed offerings. Confirm the exact workflow during a walkthrough.
Client connection
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Show which records reach the owner, how a clinic connects a client, and what happens when a record changes.
Nuzlo's published offering
Clinic Connect is described as connecting records to the Nuzlo pet-owner app.
Multiple locations
Ask every provider to demonstrate
Find a patient's chart from another location. Confirm access controls and whether the setup matches your practice.
Nuzlo's published offering
The homepage describes multi-location support and shared access to patient charts across locations.
2. Look beyond the demonstration
The questions below are Nuzlo's suggested evaluation checklist, informed by the cited guidance. They are questions to ask each provider, not claims that Nuzlo or another system already meets them.
Data ownership, export, and privacy
AVMA's data stewardship principles emphasize practice control, portability, accessibility, and transparency. Ask what you can export, in which formats, who can access your information, and how consent for data use works. [2]
Migration, training, and go-live
Ask which histories, attachments, and balances will transfer; how the provider maps, tests, secures, and validates them; and when your team can review the result. Agree on training, a cutover plan, and help after launch. AAHA recommends planning both the migration and the people side of a PIMS change. [3]
Integrations, support, and continuity
List the labs, imaging tools, payment services, and communications tools your practice relies on. Ask for confirmed connections, any extra charges, support hours and escalation options, and what happens during an internet outage. Request written details on backups, recovery, and staff access controls.
Total cost and contract terms
Request an itemized quote covering subscription, setup, migration, training, hardware, integrations, and extra locations. Ask about minimum terms, renewals, cancellation, and export fees. Compare the same scope and time period rather than subscription prices alone.
Nuzlo's public pages do not specify migration coverage, export formats, third-party integrations, support commitments, backup terms, or a full price schedule. Treat those as open questions for the Clinic Connect team, not included capabilities.
3. Keep a simple comparison record
For each must-have workflow, record the provider, what your team saw, what remains unconfirmed, any extra cost, and who will follow up. Use three evidence labels: demonstrated, confirmed in writing, or still open. A missing answer is a follow-up question—not proof a system can or cannot do the job.
Choose based on your team's priorities and the evidence you gather. This guide does not rank competitors or claim that one PIMS is right for every practice.
